Lioness goddess of war and pestilence |
News of a cache of 66 Sekhmet statues discovered in Luxor.
Pharaoh Amenhotep lll (father of Akhenaten) had legions of these goddesses set up as a final defence against a viral calamity in the ancient world.
The goddess of war, plagues and destruction was also seen as a protector against pestilence if sufficiently appeased... hence the vast number of apotropaic images created.
