An Emotional Defence of Mythology… Isis and Osiris… Garden of Eden… and more.
Metaphor, mythology, parables and story are always valid. In fact, they are essential to successful communication.
Fiction writers know it.
So do admen. Advertising insists on the importance of emotionalising material in order to persuade an audience.
“Until we stir in the vital ingredient of emotion, we are not going to communicate” - noted adman William Bernbach said tellingly.
We need to grant value to the emotional power of mythology, metaphor and story, whether it’s the ancient Egyptian story of Isis and Osiris, or Adam and Eve (with the symbolic Garden of Eden, the eating of the forbidden fruit and the entry of death into a fallen world).
We demand truth in this scientific age, yes, but we also need to value the power of emotionalised truths.
The Parables are perfect examples of the power of story and metaphor to communicate.
